September 30, 2022 Happy Birthday, CECUT! A treasure of the San Diego/Baja California region, CECUT (Centro Cultural Tijuana) celebrates its 40th birthday on October 20, 2022. CECUT is located close to the San Ysidro Port of Entry, in the popular Zona Rio neighborhood of Tijuana. Offerings include a performance theater, Film theater, Aquarium, a lovely walled sculpture garden, the Museum of the Californias, an IMAX theater, and El Cubo. Completed in September 2008, El Cubo hosts changing exhibitions and multidisciplinary cultural events. Some areas of CECUT such as the garden are open to the public free of charge, while other areas require paid admission (tickets are very reasonably priced). A seat at a recent showing of a movie in the IMAX theater cost only about 3 dollars (US). CECUT is a modernist landmark designed by architects Pedro Ramírez Vásquez and Manuel Rosen Morrison. Both architects were born in Mexico City, and both are celebrated for their work on facilities for the 1968 Olympic Games that were hosted there. In addition to his distinguished design career, Manuel Rosen Morrison was a professor at San Diego’s NewSchool of Architecture and Design for more than 20 years. CECUT is well worth a visit the next time you are in Tijuana. Congratulations on 40 years!
